More charges filed against Christy

A federal grand jury on Tuesday added seven additional charges against a McAdoo man charged with threatening the lives of President Donald Trump, Northampton District Attorney John Morganelli, and any law enforcement officers who tried to catch him as he fled authorities for four months.

The grand jury returned a superseding indictment adding the charges against Shawn Christy, 27.

A superseding indictment is one that has added either charges or defendants to an earlier indictment.

One reason for a superseding indictment is the discovery of new information during an investigation.

The seven new charges are interstate transportation of a stolen vehicle, two counts of interstate transportation of a stolen firearm, two counts of interstate transportation of a firearm while under a felony information, one count of unlawful possession of a firearm as a convicted felon, and one count of unlawful possession of a firearm as a fugitive, according to United States Attorney David J. Freed of the Middle District of Pennsylvania.

The superseding indictment also contains the four threat offenses that were charged in the original indictment, including the threat against Trump.

Christy faces up to 10 years in prison, one for each of the unlawful possession of firearms offenses, interstate transportation of stolen firearms and interstate transportation of a stolen vehicle.

In addition, the maximum penalty for interstate transportation of firearms while under a felony information is five years in prison, and up to five years in prison, a term of supervised release following that, and a fine for each threat offense.

The indictment alleges the crimes were committed by Christy between July 25 and Aug. 20, 2018.

At that time, Christy was on the run from law enforcement, fleeing in June after he failed to show up for jury selection for his trial on charges he attacked the McAdoo mayor with a stick during an argument about snow removal.

He fled through Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Kentucky, Maryland and New York, stealing cars and weapons, and breaking into homes and businesses.

Christy was captured on Sept. 21 hiding in a ravine near Mansfield, Ohio.

Christy also faces court action on a number of local charges, including one of aggravated assault involving then-McAdoo Mayor Stephan Holly on March 15, 2017.

Rush Township police charged Christy with burglary, theft and criminal mischief on Aug. 24; Butler Township police with theft, receiving stolen property, criminal trespass and illegally possessing a firearm.

He was video arraigned on the Rush Township charges on Nov. 15 before District Magisterial Judge Steven Bayer, who denied him bail due to his being a flight risk. His preliminary hearing on those charges is scheduled for 1 p.m. on Jan. 8, 2019.

He has a long history of stalking and threatening former Alaska Gov. and Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin, her family, lawyer and others.

The threat to President Trump is being investigated by United States Secret Service, and the other charges are being investigated by the FBI and Butler Township Police. Assistant U.S. Attorney Francis P. Sempa is prosecuting the case.
