Monroe man flees burning car, scene

A Monroe County man fled his burning car after it collided with two other vehicles and also the scene of the crash leaving behind injured people in the other vehicles.

Pocono Mountain Regional police said the incident occurred Saturday at 5:54 p.m. at the intersection of Route 940 and Harvest Lane, in Tobyhanna Township.

Police said their investigation revealed that Jerome Pedone, 30, of 842 Route 314, Swiftwater, was eastbound on 940 driving a Jeep Grand Cherokee when he failed to stop for a red signal at Harvest Lane and collided with two other vehicles. The Cherokee burst into flames as Pedone fled the scene on foot.

The driver of the second vehicle was trapped inside his vehicle and was freed by police and bystanders. A passenger in the second vehicle was also injured and carried to safety by police. The operator and passenger were transported to hospitals. The operator of the second vehicle was flown to the Lehigh Valley Hospital, Cedar Crest. The driver of the third vehicle was not injured. Police declined to name the victims involved.

Pedone was later located and taken into custody. Police said charges are pending.

Assisting at the scene were volunteers from the Mount Pocono and Tobyhanna fire companies and the Pocono Regional EMS unit.
