Monroe commissioners honor retiring county treasurer

Claudette Segear has spent the last 41 years serving the people of Monroe County, the last 20 as the elected county treasurer.

“One thing I always admired about Claudette is that she was only a Democrat or a Republican when she was registering to run, after that it didn’t matter which party, she would represent all of the people of the county,” Commissioner John Moyer said. “That is the kind of politician I like.”

Segear was honored during this week’s commissioner’s meeting with a certificate and a “gold” plated antique check printing machine.

“We all know how you have embraced new technology Claudette,” Moyer said. “So we got you this modern gold-plated, well, gold painted, check printer.”

Grants

The commissioners executed a grant agreement with the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection for 2018 in the amount of $48,808 for a mosquito-borne disease control grant, a renewal maintenance agreement with Tyco Simplex Grinnell for $16,595 for maintenance of the fire alarm system at the county jail, a service agreement with Engle-Hambright and Davies Inc. for $28,250 to perform insurance risk management, technical and brokerage series for the counties Risk Management Program and a professional services agreement with Borton-Lawson Engineering Inc., in the amount of $9,500 to perform bridge engineering services consisting of bridge safety inspection report reviews, and for maintenance and construction oversight on county bridges at a per-project cost.

The commissioners also executed two Dam Rehabilitation Applications for Watershed Protection Flood Prevention with the United States Department of Agriculture for the study of the possible rehabilitation of Goose Run Pond and Leavitt Branch Dams.

Applications were also approved for Federal Assistance grants in the estimated amounts of $3.4 million for Goose Run Pond Dam and $4.1 million for Leavitt Branch Dam.

“These dams were built after the 1955 flood,” Moyer said. “They are not build to current standards and should probably be brought up to current standards in the next three or four years. We are just looking for funding for the future.”
