Miller joins Yale basketball staff as director of player development
NEW HAVEN, Conn. — Marian High School graduate John Miller has joined the Yale women’s basketball staff as director of player development, bringing 13 seasons of assistant coaching experience to his new role.
“We are thrilled to welcome John and his family, Rashana and Eli, to our Bulldog Family,” said Yale head coach Allison Guth. “Coach Miller is known as a skilled recruiter and phenomenal teacher in our profession. His commitment to growing our program through his 13 years of Division I coaching experience is valued greatly. John has immediately positively impacted our staff and will do the same with our team.
“It’s not every day you get to both grow with someone professionally while personally benefiting from the fantastic human that they are. I am beyond grateful Coach Miller has joined our efforts at Yale.”
Prior to joining the Bulldogs, Miller spent five seasons as an assistant coach at Richmond and seven seasons as an assistant coach at Rider, honing his skills as a coach and recruiter.
At Richmond, Miller coached the posts and guards, helping the Spiders to a WNIT berth in 2014-15. That season they finished with the team’s most Atlantic 10 conference wins in 10 seasons. Miller recruited and developed four all-conference players and one all-rookie team selection. In 2019 he helped the Spiders land a top 100 recruit, and during his tenure they had one of the A10’s top five recruiting classes for three straight seasons.
At Rider, where he coached the guards, Miller helped the Broncs to back-to-back seasons with the fifth-most wins in school history (15, 2012-13 and 2013-14). In 2012-13 he helped the team tie the school record for MAAC wins in a season (10). As offensive coordinator, he oversaw an improvement from 10th to third in the conference in offense. He also recruited and developed six all-conference and five all-rookie team selections, including a conference player of the year.
Prior to joining the Rider staff, Miller spent a season as an assistant coach at Mount St. Mary’s in 2006-07.
Miller graduated from Mount St. Mary’s in 2006 with a degree in business and earned his MBA from The Mount in 2008. He was the Times News Golfer of the Year in 2001 during his senior year at Marian.
Yale is coming off a 2018-19 season in which the Bulldogs finished with 16 wins, tied for third-best in school history. Yale returns five players who made 20 or more starts this past season, and next year’s returnees accounted for 89 percent of the points the team scored this year.
