Marian softball rallies past Weatherly

HOMETOWN – If there is one thing the Marian softball team learned Thursday afternoon, it nearly came at a dear price.

This is not your typical Weatherly team.

The Lady Wreckers came out gunning for an upset, scoring three times in their first at-bats, but the problem was they never could sustain the early affront.

Marian got the hint by the fifth and sixth innings, scoring eight times to chalk up a come-from-behind 9-3 victory in a Schuylkill League Division 3 encounter.

“We didn’t have our caps on correctly,” said winning coach Kyle Faust, as his team improved to 4-1, 4-0. “It could have been a little bit of us not taking them highly. They’re not bad, they’ll win their share of games if they continue to play (the way) they did against us.”

The issue, in the eyes of Weatherly’s coach Will Bartel, is not finishing.

“We need to play seven full innings. Not one,” he said. “Yes, we started good, but we’ve got to learn how to finish a complete game.”

The Wreckers (1-3, 1-2) excelled from the onset when they stunned the Fillies, racing off with a three-run lead after a half inning. Five hits, one each from Alexis Colecio, Shannon Frye, Corra Chincola and Hailey Wenner, and a two-run single by Katie Graham fueled their hopes for a win.

“That start was great,” said Bartel. “But this is not a one-inning game. It takes seven innings, and that’s something we’ve got to learn how to do. We need to get better at the (little) things before we can be a good softball team. We lost three straight games this week.”

Marian cracked the scoring drought in the home third using singles off the bats of Emily Shaud and Mia Nemeth, coupled with a Weatherly error, for a run that made it 3-1.

Marian took the lead with a three-run fifth inning in which the Fillies sent nine batters to the plate. Singles from Reese Erbe, winning pitcher Lyndsey Reinoehl, Macy Alansky, Jade Ritsick and Shaud gave them a 4-3 lead.

Then in the sixth, Marian batted around plus one en route to a five-run, five-hit rally to seal the victory. Reinoehl had the big blast with an RBI double, while Erbe, Ritsick and Shaud and Abbey Joy each had hits in the uprising.

“I hope we learned a lesson,” said Faust. “You can’t just turn it on and off. You’ve got to be consistent and never take a team for granted. Maybe this will sink in.”
