Marian senior dies 7 months after crash

A Marian Catholic High School senior who was seriously injured in a car crash seven months ago has died.

Lexi Tessitore, 17, suffered numerous injuries in a July 2019 crash in Schuylkill County.

She died on Friday at Lehigh Valley Hospital, according to a press release from the Lehigh County Coroner.

Students at Marian Catholic High School, who rallied around their injured classmate, held a special school Mass Monday afternoon in memory.

“Every day, every class we prayed for her. She was never not in people’s thoughts at school,” said Mary Matunis, a teacher and adviser who had Tessitore in class.

In the seven months following the crash, Tessitore had been in several hospitals and rehabilitation centers.

During her battle, students held several fundraisers. They sold T-shirts and bracelets with the slogan “Tessitore Tough,” and members of the basketball team wore them in solidarity. Proceeds from an annual Powder Puff football game and a French Club fundraiser were also donated.

The SADD club, which Matunis advises, created posters and inspirational messages to display in Tessitore’s room and for her mom to read to her. Matunis said she personally traveled to visit her.

“We were hoping that hearing words from her friends, that any bit would help,” Matunis said.

At Monday’s Mass, parents and former students returned to pay their respects, as well as Tessitore’s mother and stepmother.

In addition to holding a special Mass, the school also provided counselors from Catholic Charities and held a special adoration in Theology classes on Monday.

School officials said that as a student, Tessitore was quiet and responsible. She continued a family tradition of attending Marian.

“She was soft-spoken, very kind and caring,” said Pete Sanfilippo, the school’s dean of students.

The Lehigh County Coroner’s office said in a press release that an autopsy was performed Saturday, but the cause and manner of death were pending further testing.

Following the news of Tessitore’s death, an online fundraiser was set up to assist with funeral expenses.

That fundraiser had generated more than $4,700 as of Tuesday morning. Another online fundraiser started shortly after the crash raised $11,755.

“The financial hardship can only be imagined in situations like this. Therefore this GoFundMe account is being created to help in the burial costs for Lexi,” the GoFundMe page read.

Matunis said Marian will continue to support the Tessitore family.

“We said today: they’re not done with us yet. I think that’s the beauty of Marian,” she said.
