Lehighton, Tamaqua, JT get volleyball wins

Lehighton, Tamaqua and Jim Thorpe all posted volleyball victories on Monday.

VOLLEYBALL

Lehighton-Northwestern

In a back and forth contest, Lehighton eventually bested Northwestern, 25-17, 15-25, 25-21, 25-22 in a non-league match.

The Indians (11-7) got strong efforts from Lillian Brown (19 digs, two aces); Emily Haberman (16 assists, two aces); Sarah Bradley (10 digs, six kills, two aces); and Vanessa Ahner (five kills).

For the Tigers, Emily Corke had 36 digs, Ashley Bennicoff amassed 11 digs and 25 assists, Katie Smith had 10 kills, six digs and four blocks, and Sarah Sekerak had eight kills and three blocks.

Schuylkill Haven-Tamaqua

Tamaqua rallied for a five-set Schuylkill League victory over Schuylkill Haven, 25-14, 23-25, 19-25, 25-11, 15-9.

Emily Amershek had 13 kills and five aces to lead the Raiders. Amy Hadesty added five kills and two blocks, while Kaitlyn Stauffenberg finished with 17 assists and two aces.

Jim Thorpe-Williams Valley

Jim Thorpe swept Williams Valley in Schuylkill League action, 25-16, 25-8, 25-9.

Kelsey Carroll had seven assists and six kills for the Olympians. Kenzi Rosenberger added five kills and four aces, and Autumn Snyder had five kills.

FIELD HOCKEY

Pleasant Valley-PM West

Pleasant Valley used their potent offense to earn an 11-0 win over Pocono Mountain West in Eastern Pennsylvania Conference action.

Sarah Kaye scored a hat trick for the Bears, while also adding a pair of assists. Kassidy McKeever, Joelle McKeever, and Meara Hanyon all scored a pair of goals, while Shannon Carr and Jessica Schneider added individual tallies for the winners. Meara Hanyon had two assists.

Pleasant Valley held a dominant 40-0 edge in shots on goal in the lopsided affair, along with a 16-0 advantage in penalty corners.

Catasauqua-Lehighton

Lehighton showed its dominance over non-league opponent Catasauqua, with a 9-1 victory.

Lauren Marks recorded a hat trick for the Tribe (11-4). Gabbie Szozda finished with a pair of goals. Maura Phelan and Mackenzie Hoats both had a goal and an assist in the contest, while Paige Gruber and Kaia Slaw also tallied goals.

The Indians had a 39-1 lead in shots.

BOYS SOCCER

Lehighton-Whitehall

Whitehall raced out to a 4-0 lead at halftime before finishing off non-league opponent Lehighton, 9-0.

Aziz Atiyeh had three goals and two assists for the Zephyrs, who had a 19-2 advantage in shots.

With the win, Whitehall improves to 11-5 on the season, while the Indians fall to 6-10-1.

Wilson-Northern Lehigh

On Northern Lehigh’s Senior Night, Wilson played spoiler with a 9-0 Colonial League defeat over the hosts.

Clinging to a 3-0 lead at intermission, Wilson erupted in the second half for six more unanswered goals to win going away.

Palmerton-Catasauqua

Palmerton used its balance offensively to defeat Catasauqua, 5-2 in Colonial League action.

Jonathan Perloni scored a pair of goals for the Blue Bombers, while Bryce Beahm, Connor Russo and Corlan Wood all added individual scores for the Bombers.

Northwestern-Fleetwood

Northwestern held on for a 2-1 non-league victory over Fleetwood.

The win keeps the Tigers (17-0 overall, 11-0 Colonial League) unbeaten with one regular season game left.

Noah Meyers and Kenny Gawelko scored first-half goals for the Tigers. Lucas Graham scored early in the second half for Fleetwood, but goalie Taylor Wanamaker (four saves) came up with some big saves down the stretch.
