Lehighton man killed in turnpike crash

A Carbon County man was killed when the vehicle he was a passenger was involved in a crash along the northeast extension of the turnpike.

State police at the Pocono barracks said the crash occurred at 12:50 a.m. on Sunday in East Penn Township, Carbon County.

Troopers said Angela Gaspar, 39, of Philadelphia, was driving northbound operating a 2008 Mazda 3 in the left lane when her vehicle struck a deer crossing the roadway in front of her. After striking the deer she crossed into the right lane and struck the right rear of a 2001 GMC Jimmy driven by Joseph Kozero, 21, of Lehighton.

Troopers said a passenger with Kozero, Michael Hartman, 52, of Lehighton, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Kozero was injured and taken to the Lehighton hospital while Gaspar was transported to the Lehigh Valley Hospital, Cedar Crest.

Assisting troopers at the scene were volunteers from the Bowmanstown Fire Company and EMS units from Lehighton and Danville.
