Kunkletown man faces firearms charges

A Kunkletown man faces firearms charges after being pulled over during a traffic stop.

Tucker Smith, 22, faces charges of firearms not to be carried without a license, drivers required to be licensed, and general lighting requirements.

According to the affidavit of probable cause filed by officer Dane O’Brien of the Palmerton Borough Police Department:

At around 10:20 p.m., O’Brien was on patrol in the 500 block of Delaware Avenue when he observed a white Toyota Camry with North Carolina registration traveling away from Route 248. The driver’s side registration light was operable, while the passenger side was not.

O’Brien initiated a traffic stop in the 900 block of Delaware Avenue. He then requested the driver’s license registration and proof of insurance.

O’Brien observed what appeared to be a hand gun nuzzled between the driver’s seat and center compartment.

Smith said that he possesses a firearm and confirmed its location. He relinquished the firearm to O’Brien, and later produced a Pennsylvania identification card identifying him.

When the officer requested Smith’s concealed weapon’s permit, he said that he doesn’t have one.

O’Brien later confirmed this through dispatch and discovered upon verifying Smith’s information that he does not possess a valid driver’s license as well.

Smith is scheduled to have a preliminary hearing at 10 a.m. Aug. 8 before District Judge William Kissner of Palmerton.
