Former Tamaqua man fronts tribute band

The historic Mauch Chunk Opera House, 14 W. Broadway in Jim Thorpe, will welcome Foreigner tribute band Double Vision on Saturday, featuring Tamaqua’s own Shane Zehner as frontman for what has been dubbed “one of Dallas’s premier tribute acts,” according to Texas-based MXD Magazine.

“I was a local musician in the late ’80s and ’90s in the Tamaqua area and moved to Dallas around 1997,” said Zehner.

“I have not played with a band back in the local Pennsylvania area for almost 20 years. This is a great homecoming for me, and I am excited to be playing a show back where I grew up.”

Zehner has played in several cover and original bands over the years, but found that tribute bands were the fastest way to make cash.

“It was easy to pick up and ride their coattails and get some money,” he said.

Started in 2010, the band includes Russ D. Contreras and Shannon Shaarpe, both on guitar; James Young on bass; Dan Nelson on keyboards; Jason Greene on drums; and Zehner belting out those familiar Lou Gramm vocals.

“This lineup consists of professional accomplished musicians that have been playing around the (Dallas-Fort Worth) music scene for decades.

“Double Vision’s goal is to pay homage to Foreigner by playing all their songs as close as possible to give our fans the concert they would expect by such great artists as Foreigner,” he said.

Since fronting Double Vision, Zehner has been able to meet members of the band he covers.

“Lou Gramm was at Oyster Bay last week, and I was able to meet him in person,” he said.

“Nick Jones (Foreigner keyboard player), gave us a keyboard he used on stage and kept all the setting in it that he used.”

Zehner says the band is appreciative of the tribute group.

“They are happy we’re out there supporting their music and working on getting their name out and into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame some day.”

Along with performing on Saturday, Zehner says he is most excited to be back in area with his award-winning group.

“I’m looking forward to coming home to play with a top-tier band and show the town how far I’ve gotten since high school.”

Double Vision will open for KICK — The INXS Experience on Saturday at 8 p.m.
