Early morning fire guts century-old Pennsylvania church

MIDLAND (AP) — An early morning fire gutted a century-old church in western Pennsylvania, but parishioners point to signs of hope.

The blaze at Midland’s 105-year-old First Baptist Church in Beaver County was reported early Saturday.

Crews from Midland and surrounding stations put out the flames. Some neighboring homes were evacuated as a precaution. No injuries were reported.

The Tribune-Review reports that people viewing the damage were quick to point out that despite the missing roof, charred rubble and mangled debris, the main cross was still there and the pulpit and choir pit were untouched.

Another church down the street has offered to let members use its facilities for Sunday services. Community members plan local fundraisers to help with repair costs.

A state fire marshal is investigating the cause of the blaze.
