Driver faces drug charges after traffic stop

Two men from Hazleton are facing drug dealing charges after police uncovered 150 bags of heroin during a traffic stop in Weatherly.

On Sept. 19, Weatherly Police stopped a 2003 Acura for a headlight violation.

When officers approached the vehicle, they smelled burned marijuana. The driver, Jarlin Lara, 21, of Diamond Avenue in Hazleton, admitted to smoking marijuana in the vehicle earlier that night.

Lara said AutoZone gave him the wrong light bulb and it wasn’t functioning.

When asked if he had any contraband, Lara said he wasn’t aware of any.

A Nesquehoning officer who also arrived at the scene had Lara perform a field sobriety test, which he failed. Lara refused to submit to a blood test.

One of the passengers told police his name was John Martinez, but that identity couldn’t be confirmed. Police said they later identified him as Elio Angel Osorio-Soto, also of Diamond Avenue, Hazleton.

As Osorio-Soto got out of the vehicle, his phone and a bundle of baggies containing suspected heroin fell from his pocket.

Police then detained all the passengers, and searched the vehicle.

The search uncovered 100 baggies in a rear-seat console, next to where Osorio-Soto was sitting; 45 bags of suspected heroin under the passenger seat floor mat, and a bag of marijuana in the center console.

At the Weatherly Police Station, police again asked Lara if he had any contraband, and he admitted to having a bag in his shoe. Police said it contained approximately 3 grams of cocaine.

Lara allegedly admitted that the 45 bags of heroin belonged to him, and he planned to sell them.

Both men were sent to Carbon County Correctional Facility with bail set at $30,000 for Lara and $50,000 for Osorio-Soto.

Preliminary hearings have been scheduled for Sept. 26.
