Clerk audit not being released

Carbon County has received the money it was missing in the clerk of courts office from its insurance carrier, officials said.

On Thursday, the county commissioners briefly discussed an audit that was completed by PCoRP, the county’s insurance carrier, as part of the investigation into the clerk of courts office.

The discussion occurred after Jim Thorpe resident Chris Lukasevich, a declared candidate for commissioner, asked if the audit findings would be made public.

Commissioner William O’Gurek said that the county would like to have the audit public, but it is part of the investigation into William McGinley and cannot be released at this time.

O’Gurek added that the county did receive a check minus the county’s deductible from PCoRP covering the amount that was found to be missing from that office.

“We have received a check from PCoRP in the amount that was allegedly stolen,” O’Gurek said. “We have been made whole.”

McGinley, 60, who was the longtime Carbon County clerk of courts until retiring in May 2018, faces charges by the Pennsylvania Attorney General’s Office of taking approximately $43,000 from mostly bail money and prison booking/fingerprinting fees.

He waived his right to a preliminary hearing before Magisterial District Judge Eric Schrantz last week and is scheduled to appear in Carbon County Court at 10:30 a.m. on March 5 for a formal arraignment.

He remains free on $50,000 unsecured bail.
