Carbon OKs building change orders

A storage facility that will provide Carbon County’s maintenance crew with more room has hit a few delays.

On Thursday, commissioners approved a change in the contract with F.J. Lesher of Palmerton, for the construction of the 160-by-45-foot storage building at the farthest end of the county-owned parking lot. The action extends the completion date from Sept. 29 to April 30, due to a delay for the railroad engineering review and revisions. The change order does not affect the contract price of $592,000.

A second change order was approved for the electrical contract with Larry McCullion & Son Electrical of Summit Hill for the replacement of a utility pole with a wire assembly as required by Reading and Northern Railroad. The contract for the electrical work increases $7,875 to $66,995.

Commissioners’ Chairman Wayne Nothstein said the building shell is up and is ready for the concrete to be poured, but has been delayed by the weather.

Carbon County awarded the two contracts in April, and work on the building began in September.

Once completed, the maintenance department, currently located along Susquehanna Street, will be relocated to the new building and will be able to house all of the county’s equipment, which is currently housed at various locations.
