Carbon hosts voting demonstrations

Carbon County is working to educate as many people as possible about the new voting process ahead of the general election next month.

On Thursday, Commissioner William O’Gurek, who sits on the county election board since he is not running for re-election, said that the election bureau is currently working to train its approximately 150 poll workers on the new machines.

“Lisa (Dart, director of elections), told me it has been going well,” O’Gurek said. “The people have been indicating they are very user friendly.”

In addition, the bureau of elections has also announced public demonstration sessions around the area, beginning on Sunday.

The public sessions will take approximately 60 to 90 minutes or until all questions are answered by the election officials.

Sessions are scheduled for the following dates and times.

• Carbon Plaza Mall, Lehighton: 1:30 p.m. Oct. 26 and 27.

• Weatherly American Legion: 1 p.m. Sunday and 9 a.m. Oct. 26.

• Penn Forest Fire Company: 11 a.m. Oct. 26 and 9 a.m. Oct. 27.

• Lansford Fire Company: 11:30 a.m. Sunday and 11 a.m. Oct. 27.

• Palmerton Library: noon on Oct. 26.

“It is on its way and we’re ready to go,” O’Gurek said. “We just need to have as many looks at the system in advance as possible.”
