A Carbon County man was sentenced to a state prison term on Friday after pleading guilty to a theft charge.

He was one of four defendants in pending criminal cases to enter a guilty plea before President Judge Roger N. Nanovic II.

Steals firearm

Jon Scott Snyder

, 20, of Palmerton, pleaded to one count of theft of a firearm. He admitted stealing a 40-calilber handgun from his father on Sept. 3, 2018, in Lower Towamensing Township.

He told Nanovic he stole the gun to sell it to get money to feed a drug addiction.

Although only 20, Nanovic noted Snyder already has a growing criminal record when his juvenile offenses are added.

Nanovic also noted, “You committed the crime while you were on parole.”

Snyder is currently serving a three- to 18-month prison term on a flight to avoid apprehension charge imposed earlier this month by Judge Joseph J. Matika.

Nanovic sentenced him to serve one to two years in a state correctional institution with the term running consecutive with the prior sentence.

He was also ordered to get a drug and alcohol evaluation and follow any recommendation for treatment and supply a DNA sample. He was given credit for 316 days already served.

Other pleas

Michael Everett

, 44, of Lehighton, pleaded to one count of simple assault. He was arrested on Aug. 27 by Lehighton police for a domestic incident at a residence along North Ninth Street. The female victim said Everett choked her during a dispute and threw a bottle at her.

He was placed on probation for a year and ordered to get a drug and alcohol and attend and successfully complete an anger management course.

Shawn Filchner

, 49, of Palmerton, pleaded to one count of retail theft. He was arrested on June 22, 2018, by Mahoning Township police at the Walmart store where he attempted to steal $94.37 worth of merchandise.

Sentencing was deferred so Filchner can apply for placement in the county’s Intermediate Punishment Program, house arrest.

James R. Norwood Jr.

, 44, of Lansford, pleaded to one count of persistent disorderly conduct with a charge of simple assault dropped in a plea bargain with the district attorney’s office. He was charged for an incident on June 23 by Lansford police at a residence along East Abbott Street. Police responded to a reported domestic incident.

Nanovic placed him on probation for six months concurrent with a four-month prison term he is currently serving in Schuylkill County prison. He must also get a mental health evaluation.

Each defendant sentenced must also pay court costs of about $1,000 and a $50 per month supervision fee while on parole or probation.

ARD placement

Marina Vasilyeva

, 62, of Jim Thorpe, was placed in the county’s Accelerated Rehabilitation Disposition probation program in two pending cases, both involving forgery - unauthorized writing. She was charged by Palmerton police with forging the name of Dr. Edward Manzella on prescription pads to obtain drugs. She claimed the drugs were she was writing the prescriptions for was for her mother.

Nanovic placed her in the program for two years and ordered her to pay $650 for the cost of the program, pay court costs of about $1,000, pay a $50 per month supervision fee while in the program and render 20 hours of community service.
