Carbon County court

A Bethlehem man admitted in Carbon County court on Monday to four retail theft counts.

He was one of 11 defendants in pending cases to enter a guilty plea before Judge Joseph J. Matika

Mahoning incident

, 34, admitted entering the Walmart store in Mahoning Township on four separate occasions and removing various items, mostly electronic devices, from the store.

Fonseca was arrested by township police for thefts that occurred on April 13, May 17 and 28 and June 9.

Fonseca is currently an inmate in the Northampton County prison facing sentencing on charges and has a pending case in Bucks County.

Fonseca said he has been accepted into the Northampton County drug rehabilitation program which includes six months in prison, 12 months in an inpatient rehab program and six months in a halfway house. He also said Bucks County authorities have agreed to the placement to settle the charge in that county.

Matika sentenced him to serve six to 23 months in the county prison followed by two years of probation. He was also ordered to render 100 hours of community service when paroled, supply a DNA sample, get a drug and alcohol evaluation and follow any recommendation for treatment, zero tolerance for drug or alcohol use and make restitution to Walmart for $5,852.

Matika said if Fonseca is placed in the Northampton drug program he will permit him to serve his Carbon time also in the program. He also warned Fonseca if he fails to successfully complete the program, he will be brought back to Carbon and serve the prison term.

Jailed for thefts

A Luzerne County man was given a prison term after pleading to two theft counts.

Vincent Roman

, 63, of Freeland, pleaded to one count of theft for an incident on Jan. 27 in McAdoo where he took a 50-amp power cord from a recreation vehicle. He pleaded to a second theft that occurred on Feb. 14 along Banks Street in Banks Township where he took 4 gallons of gasoline from a property. In both cases state police at Hazleton filed the charges.

Because of a prior criminal record, Roman was told by Matika he faced a prison term.

Matika then sentenced him to serve three to 12 months in the county prison, get a drug and alcohol evaluation, zero tolerance for drug and alcohol use, render 50 hours of community service and make restitution of $1,075.29 for the power cord and $10 for the gasoline.

He will begin the jail term at 9 a.m. on Friday.

Other pleas

Kevin Edward Brown Jr.

, 20, of Lansford, pleaded to one count of retail theft. He was arrested by Mahoning Township police for an incident at the Walmart store. The stolen items were recovered.

Matika placed him on probation for a year and ordered him to render 50 hours of community service and stay out of the Walmart store. The term runs concurrent with a probation sentence he is serving in another matter.

Francis W. Chambers

, 31, of Lansford, pleaded to one count of access device fraud. He was charged by Lansford police for using the credit card of a woman without her permission to make a food purchase at Marco’s Pizza.

He was placed on probation for a year and ordered to make restitution of $56.64 to Marco’s, render 50 hours of community service and stay out of the pizza shop.

John Rosenberg

, 32, of Holbrook, New York, and formerly of Lansford, pleaded to one count of false reports.

He admitted making a false stolen vehicle report to Lansford police on April 21.

He was placed on probation for six months and ordered to render 25 hours of community service.

Kevin M. Welch

, 37, of Conyngham, Luzerne County, pleaded to one count of theft.

He admitted taking the iPhone of a female in Weatherly on June 10, 2016.

He was placed on probation for a year and ordered to render 50 hours of community service and have no contact with the victim.

Andrea Mazzella

, 49, of Lehighton, pleaded to one count each of accidents causing damage to an unattended vehicle and driving while under suspension, DUI related. He was arrested by Mahoning Township police on May 8 after his vehicle struck a parked vehicle, and he left the scene but was later located. A check showed he was driving under suspension.

Matika sentenced him to serve 30 to 60 days on the suspension count, but he must serve the full 60 days and pay a fine of $1,000. On the accident count he was placed on probation for a year, concurrent with the first count, and ordered to pay restitution for damages of $794.36.

He began the jail term on Monday.

Vincent Anthony Keller

, 33, of Perkasie, Bucks County, pleaded to one count each of defiant trespass and criminal mischief.

He was arrested on May 21, 2017, by Summit Hill police for an incident at the Lansford Courts. He was at a residence in the development and told to leave but didn’t.

Sentencing was deferred so he can apply for placement in the county’s Intermediate Punishment Program, house arrest.

Steven Michael Malloy

, 28, of Hazle Township, Luzerne County, pleaded to one count of disorderly conduct as a summary offense. In a plea agreement, the charge was added to the criminal complaint in exchange for a charge of possession of marijuana was dropped.

He was arrested on Dec. 18, 2017, in the area of West Main Street by Weatherly police. He was fined $150 and costs.

James Edward Hunsicker

, 51, of Nesquehoning, pleaded to one count each of simple assault and driving under suspension, DUI related.

He was arrested on June 17 by Kidder Township police following an incident along Laurelwoods Drive. Police responded to an assault report. When officers arrived, Hunsicker had already left but was later located and found driving with a suspended license.

On the suspension count Matika sentenced him to serve 30 to 60 days in jail, but must serve the full 60 days and pay a fine of $1,000. On the assault count he was placed on probation for a year, concurrent with the first count, and make restitution of $300.47 to the victim and have no contact with the victim, get a drug and alcohol evaluation and render 50 hours of community service.

Seth Krynock

, 22, of Summit Hill, pleaded to driving under suspension — DUI related, and five other motor vehicle code summary offenses.

He was arrested on May 9 by Lansford police along Patterson Street.

On the suspension count he was sentenced to serve 30 to 60 days in jail, but must serve the entire 60 days, and pay a fine of $1,000. On the summary offenses he was fined a total of $575 and costs. He is currently an inmate in the county prison on a probation violation.

Each defendant must also pay court costs of about $1,000 and a $50 per month supervision fee while on parole or probation.
