Carbon County court

A Carbon County man pleaded guilty in the county court on Monday to threats counts and a drug charge.

He was one of seven defendants in pending criminal cases to enter a guilty plea before Judge Joseph J. Matika.

Palmerton incident

Christopher T. Smith

, 32, of Palmerton, pleaded to three counts of terroristic threats, two counts of harassment and one count of possession of a controlled substance, methamphetamine.

He was arrested on the threats counts on Dec. 26, 2018, when Palmerton police responded to a residence along Columbia Avenue. A woman reported that Smith had posted several threats to her on Facebook. The drug count stems from an incident on Aug. 28, 2018, filed by Palmerton police for an incident at the same Columbia Avenue address.

Matika deferred sentencing. It was noted Smith has three other pending criminal matters.

Other pleas

Philip James Mumie II

, 30, of Weatherly, pleaded to one count of terroristic threats.

He was arrested on Jan. 21 by state police at Hazleton following a domestic incident at a residence along Buck Mountain Road in Lausanne Township, with a female victim.

Matika sentenced him to time-served (57 days) to one year in jail and ordered he get both drug and alcohol and mental health evaluations, render 75 hours of community service and attend and successfully complete an anger management course.

Christian Wayne Hardesty

, 26, of New York City, pleaded to one count each of simple assault and resisting arrest.

He was arrested on Jan. 7 when state police at Fern Ridge responded to a location along Interstate 80 in Kidder Township, where a bus had stopped because of an unruly passenger. On scene troopers found Hardesty in an intoxicated condition. He fought with officers, assaulting a trooper and resisting arrest.

Matika sentenced him to time-served (70 days) to one year in jail on each count, running concurrently, and ordered he render 75 hours of community service.

Robert Fredericks

, 36, of Tamaqua, pleaded in two pending cases. He pleaded to one count each of false report to law enforcement officers and retail theft.

He was arrested on the reports count on March 20, 2018, by Mahoning Township police following an incident along Route 443. Police responded to an crash report in which Fredericks gave false information. The retail theft count stems from an incident at the Walmart store in Mahoning Township that occurred on March 14, 2018.

Matika placed him on probation for 18 months on each count with the terms running concurrently. He was also ordered to render 75 hours of community service and stay out of the Walmart store in Mahoning Township.

Alex Benton

, 26, of Effort, pleaded to one count of harassment, as a summary offense, with a charge of simple assault dropped in a plea bargain with the district attorney’s office.

He was arrested on March 3, 2017, by Summit Hill police for an incident at a residence along West Hazard Street involving a female victim.

Benton is currently an inmate in the Monroe County prison serving a probation violation sentence.

Matika sentenced him to serve 30 days in jail, concurrent with the Monroe County term.

Michael P. Wensel

, 43, of Jim Thorpe, pleaded to one count of retail theft. He was arrested on Sept. 26, 2018, by Palmerton police at the Country Harvest Family Market.

He was placed on probation for a year and ordered to render 50 hours of community service, get both drug and alcohol and mental health evaluations, make restitution of $10.06 to the victim and to stay out of the victim store.

Timothy Rondell Rudd Jr.

, 27, of Hazleton, pleaded to one count of possession/sale/use or display of documents. He was arrested on July 19, 2016, by Lansford police along Snyder Avenue following a traffic stop. He had the wrong registration on the vehicle he was driving.

Matika placed him on probation for a year and ordered he render 50 hours of community service.

Each defendant sentenced must also pay court costs of about $1,000 and a $50 per month supervision fee while on probation or parole.
