California cities take on a Third World look

Published July 15. 2019 01:30PM

A few weeks ago President Donald Trump explained during an interview how sanctuary cities and the increased homelessness were destroying a whole way of life for people in major West Coast cities like Los Angeles.

The president told how sidewalks had become homes to piles of used needles, feces and refuse and how office workers had to walk through trash and filth to get into their buildings and how police officers were getting sick just walking their beat.

Not too many years ago, Third World scenes like this would not have been believed possible. Now, professional health officials are warning that the squalid conditions have set the stage for possible outbreaks of the plague.

Predictably, Democrats said the president’s dire report was motivated by politics, just as they did in calling the refugee crisis on our southern border “a manufactured crisis” earlier this year. But many experts are also sounding an alarm.

According to Jeffrey Klausner, a professor of medicine and public health at UCLA, explained that people living on the streets or in homeless shelters are vulnerable to disease outbreaks because of weakened immune systems that are worsened by stress, malnutrition, and sleep deprivation. He said multiple rodent-borne, flea-borne illnesses already exist and predicted a major infectious epidemic.

Dr. Drew Pinsky, a board-certified internist and addiction medicine specialist, agrees with that assessment, stating that the rat infestation is like nothing he’s ever seen in his life. In one interview, Pinsky said Los Angeles does not have a rodent control program, and that spells disaster since sanitation has broken down in the city. Rat fleas that spread the contamination can result in typhoid fever.

While L.A. city officials blame housing for the problem, Pinsky points right back at those same officials, calling them “disgustingly negligent.”

Ron Martinelli, a nationally renowned forensic criminologist and retired police detective with the San Jose Police Department, speaks with authority from a law enforcement perspective. He says California is rapidly becoming a two-tiered society of the very rich and the very poor, similar to a Third World country.

Democratic politicians favor open borders and a sanctuary state, allowing illegal aliens a right to vote in state and local elections. This strategy allows the party to maintain control of elections.

The California prison system is a mess, Martinelli said, and sanctuary cities ensure that illegal aliens charged with crimes will not be deported. State lawmakers approved Proposition 47, which has since freed tens of thousands of felons from state prisons and county jails back into communities. It’s created a system where police on the streets can’t even enforce outstanding felony and misdemeanor warrants. After being arrested, a person is out the same day with a promise to appear in court. Few do.

Under California’s new “Sanctuary State” status, Martinelli said police in cities like San Francisco, Oakland and Los Angeles are ordered not to assist ICE with border enforcement. He said the Kate Steinle fatal shooting case — where the shooter, a five-time convicted criminal and deported illegal alien, was acquitted — is an excellent example of how liberal politicians in California are willing to sacrifice the innocent while supporting violent illegal alien criminals.

During the Depression years of the 1930s, Shanty Towns, known as Hoovervilles, sprang up across the nation. They were built by unemployed impoverished Americans who had nowhere else to live. By 1932, between 1 million and 2 million were homeless and many lived in these shacks which lacked the basics such as adequate sanitation and clean drinking water.

Today, California, with its two-tiered society of very rich and very poor, is in need of answers, and fast. The blind mice Democratic politicians can just step out of their office suites onto the street to see firsthand the fruits of their failed policies and leadership.

Well, here we have the results of long term liberal policies put to the test. Failure, utter failure is the result. Dirt, debt, dysfunction & Democrats. Solutions aren’t even in sight as a sinking boat drifts out of sight of the shore. California is so beautiful...what a shame. Democrats have their fingerprints all over this...for many years. What a mess. Soon they will beg President Trump for help.
All the wealth is leaving. The innovators have had enough.
Jefferson warned us against too rapid a immigration, as it would not allow proper assimilation. This is what's happened to california, a model for the rest of our country.
Wake up America, turn off the TV and start thinking for yourself!
Nancy Pelosi (old white hag), go back where you came from. Feces in your streets? San Francisco received 16,000 complaints with the keyword ‘feces’ in, as residents cry out against needles and human waste (poop and pee) in the streets! So essentially San Francisco has logged over 16,000 feces complaints in one week. This is Nancy Pelosi’s district, yet she has the audacity to try and tell us how to run the country? Her district is a Sh _ _ hole.
Looking at the lack of leadership, it's not surprising that God would try and remind us all that, he is still in control (shake with quake).
People like Pelosi destroy things. They literally destroy traditions and systems. This requires a special kind of stupidity, to let a great city devolve into something like parts of San Francisco are becoming. Yet she criticizes Trump? She is the speaker? She should have been apologizing for her failures, and slithering away, but nope...
Californians must either be ignorant, or from another planet... I mean country!
Come on Joe. Do you travel with your eyes closed? SF has maps available that highlight the areas for tourists to avoid the homeless areas where tents, feces, needles & dirt would be encountered. Hotel lobbies have these maps readily available. I was just there recently. If you missed this you must be the most naive traveler there ever was. You must improve your “situational awareness” or you will get robbed! Isn’t it funny how you miss 100% of evidence that is opposite of your desired result?
It is all over the news that Police Officers contracted typhus. Also, the estimated rat population has doubled. It would be impossible to not see this stuff, especially if you are in CA. Come on Joe. Pleading ignorance is an unacceptable excuse. Wise up!
Joe, as a Palmerton native and long-time California resident, I would suggest you spend your time looking for positive solutions to the problems rather than engaging those who use sound bites and very little in the way of analysis to comment on social conditions. Homelessness is not the result of "open borders," a sound bite ruse to attack those who favor sensible immigration policy, just as surely as "socialism" is a buzz word to avoid facing issues of a changing, aging population in constructive ways.
(I wonder how many of Rambo's friends would like to repeal Medicare)
First hand experience with those different from us will go a long way toward opening up discussion about sensible solutions to a changing society/world.
By the way, I am not a starry eyed "left winger" (whatever that is) but one who has lived the values of small town and big city USA and found good in both. Unfortunately, too many of those who stay in small towns get their understanding of life from the media and not interaction with those who are different.

I hope you can be part of the solution to the homeless, aging, and deindustrializatioin crises that we face in our world today, as I am trying to be. Spending much time talking empty sound bites with those who have their mind made up is fruitless.
I will throw back one jab at Rambo and say that his (I assume it is a male writer) relatively fact-free statements that make my very happy to be a Californian for the past 42 years.

You two fellows are alone, as there are many, many, news sources, describing deplorable conditions in LA and Frisco. My reply is to Joe.
Why do you write such disrespecting comments? I quess when you hide behind a made up log on, and you have no argument, you'll accuse people you don't know, never met of never doing nearly as much as "Joe" does for the homeless. While tooting you horn, you then accuse others of wanting to "fellate" our President? Your immaturity and inability to pen a viable argument speaks loud and clear.

Sad times.
