Brish, Haven run past Marian

SCHUYLKILL HAVEN – It looks like a familiar script for Schuylkill Haven’s football team.

The Hurricanes stumbled through the first four weekends of the season a year ago and then ramped it up during divisional play.

They appear primed to do that again.

On a rare Thursday night of high school football at Rotary Field, Haven unleashed its tremendous junior runner Kobe Brish, who spearheaded an impressive 60-14 whopping of visiting Marian.

It was the lid-lifter in the Schuylkill Football League Division II for both sides, and the defending Division 2 champs played like they are looking for a repeat.

“We wanted to go out and have some fun,” said veteran Schuylkill Haven coach Mike Farr. “This is the healthiest we’ve been in about a month. I really wanted the kids to go out and have some fun. We’ve been getting beat up (every) week with kids going out with injuries.”

The injury bug has also hurt the Colts this season.

“We’ve had a lot of injuries, but so have they,” said second-year Marian coach Pat Morgans.

Haven unleashed a serious running game last night, putting up crazy numbers against the Colts.

The Hurricanes rang up 556 total offensive yards all on the ground. They were led by all-state returnee Brish, who slammed his way for 271 yards on 16 carries, including touchdowns on runs of 12, 58 and 38 yards. Joining Brish was Jake Luckenbill who nailed down 105 yards on only five touches, all in the first half. Luckenbill also hit pay dirt on runs of 16 and 65 yards. Wingback Austin Clauser figured in 93 yards, including a 55-yard touchdown run.

“That’s our offense, but we’ve got to figure out a way to throw the ball,” said Farr. “I mean we are going to go up against teams that are going to force us to throw. Last year we had that balance, but we haven’t found that just yet.”

The Hurricanes blew out to a 14-0 lead after just three-plus minutes of play, converting a pair of Colt turnovers into points.

Marian had a huge answer, or so it seemed at the time, as it mounted a season-best drive, starting on its own 11. There was a big-time pass and catch for a 38-yard game from Mason Miller to Keith McCall to the enemy 39. Another Miller to McCall hookup came again, this one a clutch 10-yard completion on a fourth-and-6 at the Haven 31. Nick Falls then lit up the board on a nifty 25-yard touchdown run and when potential Division I kicker Lucca Stroia converted the extra-point, Marian was in the foray with 4:41 to play in the opening quarter.

“That was such a big score for us, I felt that we may have gotten a big boost of confidence,” said Morgans. “But then we started to lose it.”

Indeed everything started to go sour. Haven strapped up their laces and answered in six plays with Brish scooting 58 yards for the score.

The points kept mounting for the Hurricanes after that as they built a 41-7 halftime advantage.

The lone remaining bright spot for the Colts came when McCall caught a 39-yard touchdown pass from backup quarterback Dakota Streisel in the fourth quarter.

“We get a few extra days of rest, maybe we can heal up,” said Morgans.

GETTING HIS KICKS … Stroia has the potential to take it to the next level. The junior Marian kicker will get his share collegiate looks.

WHERE IT BEGAN … Trying to find answers in a tough season may take the Colts (0-5, 0-1) back to the drawing board. They visit Minersville next Friday.

CANNON SHOTS … Schuylkill Haven (2-3, 1-0) has a chance to run the table the next four weeks before ending the regular season against rival Blue Mountain in Week 10.

COLTS NOTES … The Miller-to-McCall combo is very good. McCall had five catches for 109 yards. Falls and Streisel both flashed some potential for down the line. The pair started the season behind Seth Paluck (out for the season) and Matt Doherty (missed his second straight game with an injury) in the Colts’ backfield rotation.
