Annual gingerbread bridges and skyscrapers competition

The National Museum of Industrial History is again accepting submissions for its second annual Gingerbread Bridges and Skyscrapers competition.

The popular event, held for the first time in 2017, had participants from across the Lehigh Valley from all age ranges building everything from recreations of the Empire State Building and Allentown’s Eighth Street Bridge to a version of Stark Tower from the hit film “The Avengers.”

This event encourages participants, especially those in the elementary, middle and high school categories, to exercise their creativity, problem solving and critical thinking skills as they relate to STEM themes like architecture and construction.

“This event is the highlight of our holiday season at the museum, and the creativity displayed in last year’s winning structures was absolutely astounding. Between applying real world architectural principles and creatively using edible ingredients, we were wowed at the entries and are greatly looking forward to seeing what this year’s participants have up their sleeves,” said Glenn Koehler, marketing and outreach coordinator at the museum.

Each category (elementary school, middle school, high school, adult) will have two winners in best design and most creative categories who will be announced at an award ceremony and reception at the museum at 6 p.m. Nov. 29.

All entries are due at NMIH between Nov. 14 and Nov. 18 and will be on display from Nov. 23 to Dec. 30.

Additional rules and entry forms can be located at the museum’s website at nmih.org.
