Tamaqua man cited for hit and run

Tamaqua police have filed charges against Eugene Oberman, 22, of 702 Arlington St., Tamaqua, in connection with a hit-and-run crash early Sunday morning.

Police were called to the Turkey Hill Minute Mart, 330 E. Broad St., at 2:56 a.m. after a man driving a dark-colored SUV struck the Red Box video machine located outside the store. The impact caused the machine to shift and strike the store’s front window.

An officer on patrol saw the SUV as it exited the parking lot. When told of the crash, the officer was able to identify the SUV as a blue Jeep Grand Cherokee. It was last seen driving east on Broad Street.

A check of the streets discovered the Jeep parked on Arlington Street. The engine was still warm, the front bumper was dented on the driver’s side and fresh red paint chips were found on the edge of the Jeep’s front bumper guard.

A records check determined the vehicle was registered to Oberman.

Video surveillance footage from the store clearly show Oberman entering the store and making a purchase. The footage also shows him driving the Jeep as it made a U-turn in front of the store, hitting the Red Box machine.

He was cited for hit and run involving damage to an attended property and careless driving.
