2017 Primary election: Key races

It's election day. Polls are open until 8 p.m.

Here are some of the races we will be following tonight.

CARBON REGISTER OF WILLS

Two Democrats and two Republicans are vying for their party's nomination to be the county's next register of wills/clerk of orphan's court. Incumbent Judy Moon is retiring after 22 years in office. Connie Brown and Deborah J. Gigliotti are running as democrats, while Duane Dellecker and Jean Papay are seeking the republican nomination.

LEHIGHTON SCHOOL BOARD

The 11 people running on both tickets for the four-year terms on the school board are Joy Beers, Duane R. Eidem, Gloria J. Bowman, Katelynn R. Bear, Frank L. Tamburri, Rebecca Worthy, Gail Maholick, Phillip J. Liszka, David F. Bradley Sr., Stacey Lynn Duerst and Stephen L. Holland. Each of them appear on both tickets with the top five from each party advancing to the general election in November.

Two others seeking two-year terms on the board that are up for grabs are David L. Krause and Larry E. Stern. They are cross-filed on both the Democratic and Republican ballots and are joined by Liszka, Bradley, Maholick, Tamburri, Bear, Worthy and Beers. The top two finishers on each ballot will square off in November.

Eidem and Bowman are not seeking two-year terms.

Voters in Lehighton, Parryville and Weissport boroughs and East Penn Franklin and Mahoning townships participate in the school district balloting.

PALMERTON SCHOOL BOARD

There are seven people seeking both the Democratic and Republican nominations for four four-year terms that will be decided by the electorate. All are cross-filed candidates.

They are Barry W. Scherer, Clarence Chuck Myers, David Schwartz, Kathy Lendvay Fallow, Earl Paules, Katherine J. Baumgardt and Darlene E. Yeakel.

TAMAQUA MAYOR

Incumbent Democratic Mayor Christian Morrison has decided not to seek another four-year term. No Democrat has filed a nominating petition so the new mayor will likely be a Republican, unless a write-in campaign is conducted by someone to get the Democratic nod.

Three people have filed for the Republican nomination for mayor, and all are newcomers to the political scene in the borough.

Seeking the position are Nathan J. Gerace, William F. Price Sr. and Christine Rottet Hartung.

LANSFORD MAYOR

Democratic Mayor James Romankow is seeking re-election to another four-year term of office, but faces a challenge from within his party from Bob Silver. The winner of that race will face Republican Ronald R. Derr Jr., who in unopposed on the GOP ballot.

Silver is also in a contested democratic primary for three four-year seats on borough council.

FRANKLIN TOWNSHIP SUPERVISORS

Incumbent Franklin Township Supervisor Rod E. Green is running for re-election to another six-year term of office, but faces opposition from two other Republicans. Challenging him for the GOP nomination are Jason Frey and Jonathan Gula.

The winner of that race will face Democrat David Bradley in the fall. He is unopposed on the Democratic ticket.
