Storm staples include wine and spirits

In anticipation of Stella's arrival, locals have been buying up all the salt, water, milk and eggs they can find.

And plenty more have added a nice bottle of bordeaux, or a fifth of whiskey, to that emergency snow stash."Typically, we do experience an increase in store sales prior to a storm," Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board communications director Elizabeth Brassell said.Brassell cited figures leading up to a storm in January from last year, showing a 50 percent increase in sales over the previous year for the two days leading up to the storm. She said that while it is tough to discern particular buying patterns, there is a noticeable, if anecdotal, increase in foot traffic for state stores a few days ahead of a storm."As people go to pick up the milk, eggs and bread, they'll often pick up a bottle of wine or spirits as well," Brassell said.Brassell estimated that sales would increase by the end of Monday, as more and more people hit the stores for blizzard necessities."As folks depart from work, in anticipation of the storm, we'll see some heavy traffic in the late afternoon and early evening," Brassell said.PLCB's top sellers prior to the January 2016 storm1.
