Mauch Chunk Pharmacy eliminated

CATASAUQUA - There's one thing that never seems to change at any level of basketball competition.

Whether it's on a high school, collegiate or even professional basketball level - basketball is a game of runsAs the local basketball players who took part in the Tournament of Champions in Catasauqua on Monday found out, that holds true for adult summer basketball leagues as well.Unfortunately for Mauch Chunk Pharmacy (MCP), the Summit Hill League champions, they just couldn't put together one last run to pull out a victory in the opening round of the tournament.JCC Ted Glass used the strength of a 10-0 second-half run to pull out a 73-69 victory over the locals."I always say, 'Basketball is a game of runs,'" said Marian grad Ryan Gimbi. "This game was certainly a game of runs. I'm upset that we couldn't get the last run to get the win."But I'm happy to represent our team out here in the Tournament of Champions."Jim Thorpe High School graduates Kysheem Lynch and PJ Johnson hit back-to-back three-pointers to give MCP a quick 6-0 lead. The teams traded momentum throughout the remainder of the opening half with Gimbi sparking several MCP outbursts throughout the first half. In fact, he was involved in three out of four runs MCP put together during the first 20 minutes of play that ended with the score tied at 31-31.JCC Ted Glass took control early in the second half, building a seemingly comfortable 58-45 lead. But MCP dug deep and went on a 10-0 run to make things interesting.Gimbi hit a lay up to start the run before Panther Valley graduate Jake Szczecina and Gimbi made back-to-back three-pointers. Kysheem Lynch then kissed the ball off the glass for a layup that made it 58-55.JCC Ted Glass was able to end the MCP run, however, and prevent them from getting any closer.Another Szczecina three-pointer pulled MCP back to within three (72-69) with 34 seconds left. But that would be the last points it would score."We got off to a good start," Szczecina said. "We just ran out of gas there in the second half."It was a wonderful experience. It's a great tournament they run here, and we're happy to be a part of it."TEAM WORK ... "It was fun to be out here with these guys," said Gimbi about the team made up of Marian, Panther Valley and Jim Thorpe graduates. "I know a bunch of these guys from high school. So, it was fun to get together as a team and play the game with each other, rather than as opponents."STILL GOT MOVES … Gimbi spearheaded MCP with a game-high 27-point performance.KYSHEEM IN THE HOUSE … Kysheem Lynch also made his presence known in the Catasauqua Middle Shool gymnasium with 18 points.NEW NICKNAME … The announcer had a tough time pronouncing Szczecina's last name. So after every basket Szczecina made, the announcer would say, "Jake from State Farm." Szczecina got a good laugh each time he heard it.MAUCH CHUNK PHARMACYGimbi 9-6-7-27, Szczecina 3-0-0-8, Kha.
