Water extraction fights in two townships

Published January 01. 2016 04:00PM

Two local municipalities are dealing with the issue of water extraction for profit.

Both West Penn and Eldred townships have companies drilling test wells in anticipation of extracting natural spring water for bottling off-site.

Ringgold Acquisition Group II of Philadelphia has been drilling on property located at 1 Fort Franklin Road in West Penn. The company already has a water extraction location in operation on Kepners Road.

In Kunkletown Nestle Waters NA has been drilling test wells on property belonging to Rick Gower. The water is being drawn off of the Chestnut Spring.

In both townships the residents are overwhelmingly oppose to the operations. The concerns of the residents do not differ much from one town to the other.

In both instances the residents are concerned with the depletion of the natural water supply and its ability to recover from the extraction process. Another shared concern is the impact of the tankers transporting the water on local roads and traffic.

In the coming year both townships will continue to deal with the issue.
