Beach Party Bingo kicks off summer reading
MARY TOBIA/SPECIAL TO THE TIMES NEWS A beach ball, palm trees, flip flops and sunglass set the tone for kindergartener Hadlee Lake and her mom Heather for some Beach Bingo at the Palmerton Area Library.
The Teen Advisory Group for the Palmerton Area Library welcomed summer with its Beach Party Bingo.
Each year the group kicks off the Summer Reading Program with a fun night of playing bingo for prizes for area children, kindergarten through fourth grade.
Approximately 25 children attended the event. Children had to be registered in advance, attended by a parent and were asked to dress in beach attire.
The event was held from 6- 8 p.m.
The teen group, which has seven members at present, meets once a month. Members include Savannah Moyer, Jenny Chen, Kristen Rausch, Mara Tracey, Senia Smith, Shane Hughes and Brittany Irwin.
They encourage teens to read and spend more time at the library by promoting young adult books, movies and magazines.
The group assists the Palmerton library with story hour, book sales and the summer reading program. They create their own newsletter along with planning different programs for teens and younger children throughout the year.
Prizes for the Beach Bingo included ice cream gift cards, yo-yos and other small assorted toys.
There were refreshments and everyone went home with a new book to start them reading for the summer months.
The prizes and the snacks for the evening were provided by the Friends of the Library.
The Summer Reading Program encourages children to read as many books as they can during their vacation months away from school.
