Man drowns near Slatington

A 72-year-old Berks County man died after falling into the Lehigh River near Slatington Sunday morning.

Laverne S. Hunsicker of 14 Pheasant Drive, Greenwich Township, was fishing in the river when he fell.

Lehigh County Coroner Scott Grim said Hunsicker was pulled from the river at about 9:20 a.m. He was pronounced dead by Deputy Coroner Craig Hanz at 10:15 a.m.

Grim said the incident happened about 50 yards south of the Route 873 bridge in Washington Township.

An autopsy is scheduled on Hunsicker today.

Grim and state police from Bethlehem barracks are investigating.
