The West Penn Township police department conducted a vehicle Safety Checkpoint along Route 309 in Snyders Wednesday. Police Chief Brian Johnson said that the officers only encountered a handful of drivers who weren't wearing seatbelts.

"We don't ticket them, we just remind them that they should be wearing their seatbelts," Johnson said. "The Safety Check is to raise awareness about safety."

The officers did file several citations for vehicles with expired inspections, including a tractor trailer, and also made a drug arrest for possession of marijuana.

Officers who worked the safety check were Johnson, Sgt. Jason Lorah, Sgt. Melissa Mertz, and officers Glenn Laninger and Brent Getz.
