Former area couple celebrate 50 years

Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth D. Handwerk of Robesonia recently celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. They were married Nov. 9, 1963 at St. John's United Church of Christ in Palmerton by the Rev. Howard R. Whitebred.

Mrs. Handwerk is the former Carolyn M. Hittner, daughter of Emma Hittner of Palmerton and the late Samuel C. Hittner.Her husband is the son of the late Frank and Ida Handwerk of Palmerton.The Handwerks have a son, retired MSgt. Randy S. Handwerk, husband of Donna, of Richland; and a daughter, Melissa Platt, wife of Daniel Platt of Columbia.They have three granddaughters: Ashley Brown, wife of Kyle Brown of Stouchburg; Megan Boyer, wife of Senior Airman Tyler Boyer of Panama City, Fla.; and Cristin Brown, wife of Matthew Brown of Mechanicsburg.They have a great-granddaughter, Sadie Brown of Mechanicsburg, who was born on Jan. 5 of this year; and a great-grandson, Kaiden Boyer of Panama City, who was born on Nov. 10, 2013, the date of their anniversary party.The Handwerks celebrated their special day by recreating their wedding reception with family and friends. A party was held in Zion Blue Mountain United Church of Christ Fellowship Hall in Strausstown.
