Five teens injured in Franklin crash

Five teenagers were hurt in a multivehicle crash that happened at 11:16 a.m. Sunday morning in Franklin Township, said Kellie Heffley, wife of State Rep. Doyle Heffley (R-Carbon). Their daughter, Elizabeth was one of the drivers in the crash.

According to reports at the scene, a teenage girl, Mikayla Blakeslee, 16, was driving a white Ford pickup eastbound when she hit a patch of ice on Pohopoco Drive and then hit a gray Honda driven by Heffley's daughter which was traveling west bound.

Four teenagers were passengers in Heffley's car. Two of the teens were air lifted to Lehigh Valley Hospital - Cedar Crest for life threatening injuries. One of the teens is in ICU with a broken pelvis, partially collapsed lung and broken vertebrae.

State Police at Lehighton said the collision sent Heffley's car into a black Subaru, driven by Thomas Herness of Lehighton, with his wife and child as passengers. The family was not injured.

Blakeslee's mother, Mary Louise Blakeslee, was a passenger in the pickup, both mother and daughter were not injured, said the mother.

Heffley issued a statement Monday afternoon.
“On Sunday, my daughter, Elizabeth, was involved in a weather-related accident involving several cars in Franklin Township. Elizabeth was not badly injured, but several others were.  My family’s thoughts and prayers are with them, and their families, today.'
He added, “I want to thank everyone who has expressed concern for Elizabeth and our family. I also want to thank the emergency services workers and volunteer firefighters who responded to the scene of the accident."

The road was closed at Platz's while crews attended to the injured and cleaned up the scene.

State police at Lehighton are investigating. Franklin Township and Lehighton fire departments and Franklin Township Fire Police along with several ambulance companies were on scene.
