The Marian Fillies erupted with a late fourth-period spurt to defeat Notre Dame of Green Pond, 39-30, in a non-league contest.

The Fillies (13-1) trailed the Crusaders for much of the first three periods. Granted, Notre Dame never led by more than four (26-22 at the end of period three), but the Hometown squad was just not itself, making that four point deficit seem like a big gap.

With 4:30 remaining to play, Marian was trailing 30-29.

Then, the calvary came to the rescue.

Marian outscored the Crusaders 10-0 in the final three minutes with Abby Whildin perfect from the free-throw line hitting four-for-four, and Savanna Krushinsky chipping in three points. The Fillies outrebounded the Crusaders 10-2 in that span with Krushinsky being the reckoning force, pulling in six of them.

In that last quarter, the Fillies outpointed Notre Dame 17-4.

"Both teams struggled," said Marian coach Paul Brutto. "I'm glad we hung tough. I'm just happy we fought back."

He said his top three players Krushinsky, Whildin, and Gabby Green all struggled during the first half.

Brutto also said that Notre Dame had the advantage under the boards, but thought his team came through when needed.

"We don't have much size outside of Savanna and Abby," he said. "But I thought we rebounded well at big times."

Even with Marian's big rebounding advantage down the stretch, the Crusaders outrebounded Marian, 29-28, for the game.

Krushinsky was the top rebounder for the Fillies pulling in 10. Green and Whildin had five each.

Krushinsky also was the leading scorer for Marian with 13, getting eight in the last quarter. Whildin added 12 points.

Gabby Altmire took the scoring honors for the Crusaders (7-6) with 10 points.

The score was tied seven times in the contest, three times in the first half and four times in the second.
