Driver dies when vehicle rear-ended

An elderly LehighCounty resident was killed when his vehicle was rear-ended by a tractor trailer rig on Monday. Upper Macungie Township police said the accident occurred about 9:30 a.m. in the 9200 block of Hamilton Blvd. (Route 222).

Police said a 1999 Freightliner tractor with trailer was driven northbound by Oliver Savage, 56, of Tall Timbers, Md., and approaching the intersection with Newtown Road.Savage failed to bring his rig to a stop and struck the rear of a 2007 Dodge Grand Caravan operated by James Knappenberger, 77, of Breinigsville. The impact drove the Caravan across the center line into the southbound lane where it struck a 1999 Volvo tractor with trailer operated by Sidney Huntoon, 70, of Bath. Upon impact the Volvo traveled off the road and down a slight embankment.Knappenberger was pronounced dead at the scene by coroner Scott Grim. No one else was injured in the crash, police said. Grim said an autopsy was scheduled for this morning (Tuesday) to determine the exact cause of death.The Volvo sustained a fuel leak and the state Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) was notified. A hazmat cleanup team was summoned to the scene to clean up the spill.The investigation into the crash is continuing, police said.
