Weissport Redneck Festival opens

Have you ever heard of a honey dipper? Well, you'll learn all about them and you can become an honorary honey dipper in the newest contest at the Weissport Redneck Festival 7 p.m. Friday.

The Honey Dipper Contest will pit contestants using 10-foot-long poles with a scoop on one end to move liquid from waist-high tubs to fill a smaller container. In their heyday, the honey dippers were used to clean out household sewage from outdoor toilets."Someone cleaning out their barn found these long poles with a cupped device on the end, and fortunately they knew what they were supposed to be used for and donated them to us," said Duane Dellecker, coordinator of the Weissport Redneck Festival."They look like new old stock, so we don't think they were ever used for their intended purpose. We figured they would make for a fun new contest."Dellecker said whoever does the best job filling the container will win. While the contestants work feverishly to win, they will be bombarded with water-filled balloons, just to make the event more interesting for the spectators. No one has to remain a spectator if they don't want to."Everyone is invited to join in the fun," Dellecker said. "We've had locals competing against city people to vie for the titles. That is what makes it so entertaining. "Also featured on Friday night are Duane and Lisa Hawk, special guests of the Redneck Karaoke Entertainment on the main stage. Ride specials will be available from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, noon to 2 p.m. Saturday, and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday. There will be a Redneck Chinese auction, bull riding, beer garden and redneck characters. The tug-a-war contest also has changed. One Ton, the Gaston boys from Alfies Pizza in Lehighton, have been declared the Redneck Champions. A team of at least two, but not more than five people can challenge a like number of the champion team to try to win the $100 prize. The Weissport Redneck Festival is in its seventh year of providing the most unusual event in the region. The festival is 5-10 p.m. Friday and will continue Saturday and Sunday from noon to 9 or 10 p.m., continuing until the groups get tired or the beer runs out.The Redneck Committee invites everyone to join in and participate in the festivities, redneck games and contests.
