Carbon County officials recognized outgoing District Attorney Gary F. Dobias for his dedication to the job.

Dobias, who retires Friday after 34 years as a prosecutor and nearly 23 years as the county district attorney, accepted a resolution, presented by Carbon County Commissioners Wayne Nothstein, chairman; Thomas J. Gerhard and William O'Gurek during their weekly meeting today.

O'Gurek read the resolution prior to the presentation and thanked Dobias for leading the prosecution of hundreds of cases that came through the Carbon County Court of Common Pleas.

Dobias said that his most memorable case happened only a few years ago.

It included successfully prosecuting Ernest Troy Freeby of Lansford after he was charged with murdering his estranged wife, Edwina Onyango in 2009.

Onyango's body was never found, but through strong testimony, solid evidence and Dobias' prosecuting Freeby was convicted and sentenced to life without parole.
