Season reaches halfway point this weekend

Published September 27. 2013 05:00PM

It's hard to believe that after this weekend's action, half of the high school football season will be in the books.

Bob Ford and Brad Hurley stay tied at the top, but only four games separate the top eight prognosticators that give it their best to pick the winners each and every Friday.

A 10-5 week for this corner dropped us three games behind the leaders, but we're feeling pretty good that this week we'll give it another shot at those in the top spot.

A big hats off to Justin Carlucci, who made the biggest move among us with a 13-2 record last week.

Now is the time of year that we get the homecoming games and a few rivalries so let's take a look at what the crystal ball comes up with:

NORTH SCHUYLKILL AT MARIAN - Colts got their first win of the season last week and the Spartans, this week's opponent, came up with a big win against Schuylkill Haven. North Schuylkill mentor Wally Hall knows the Marian tradition. Will he have the Spartans ready?...North Schuylkill, 24-14.

ANNVILLE-CLEONA AT TAMAQUA - After last week's meltdown at Mahanoy Area, practice up on stadium hill must have been pretty serious this week. Annville-Cleona gets to feel the hits from those practices...Tamaqua, 31-14.

JIM THORPE AT SHENANDOAH VALLEY - The Olympians showed some wide open offense last week against Panther Valley. This week, they open it up even more...Jim Thorpe, 28-14.

PANTHER VALLEY AT SCHUYLKILL HAVEN - Panthers run into a real Hurricane this week. Schuylkill Haven, 35-12.

DIERUFF AT LEHIGHTON - The Huskies are vastly improved since they joined the MVC last year. But the Indians still get the edge...Lehighton, 21-13.

WYOMISSING AT PLEASANT VALLEY - I somehow remember that last year, the Bears went down to Wyomissing and gave them quite a game. Going out on a limb on this one...Pleasant Valley, 21-20.

SALISBURY AT NORTHERN LEHIGH - The Bulldogs finally get to the part of their schedule that they might like. And they can taste a "W"...Northern Lehigh, 28-7.

PALISADES AT PALMERTON - Pirates have a long bus ride, but it all depends how the injury list is as of game time for the Bombers...Palisades, 28-14.

NORTHWESTERN AT NOTRE DAME - This is another one that could be quite a battle. Crusaders home field advantage plays a part here...Notre Dame, 21-16.

SOUTHERN LEHIGH AT PEN ARGYL - Seems that both teams were banged up last week. The team that recovers the quickest wins here...Southern Lehigh, 28-14.

BANGOR AT WILSON - Slaters and Warriors have both had rough starts this season. it gets even rougher for the Slaters...Wilson, 14-13.

EAST STROUDSBURG NORTH AT POCONO MOUNTAIN WEST - From what our Pocono scout tells us, the Timberwolves hold a little bit of an edge here...ES North, 24-14.

EAST STROUDSBURG SOUTH AT POCONO MOUNTAIN EAST - Cardinals were hurt when a couple of their players were injured in an accident earlier this week. Cavaliers still have to be the favorite...ES South, 28-14.

WHITEHALL AT PARKLAND - Love those Zephyrs, but we're going to gamble a little bit here....Parkland, 24-21.

LIBERTY AT BETHLEHEM CATHOLIC - For some reason, I always go with the Hurricanes this time of year...Liberty, 28-14.
