Cyclist dies after crash

A Slatington motorcyclist died of injuries he sustained in a crash in Carbon County.

State police at Lehighton identified the victim as Stephan P. Papay, 56. The crash occurred about 1:41 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 22, at the intersection of SR248 and Centre Street in Parryville. Papay was taken by Pennstar helicopter to St. Luke's Hospital, Fountain Hill, where he died at 8 p.m. on Sunday.Troopers said Papay was operating a 2001 Harley Davidson Sportster eastbound and just west of Club Road, while Leon Harvey Snyder, 91, of Palmerton, was driving a 2003 Chrysler PT Cruiser westbound.Troopers said Papay was attempting to make a left turn onto Centre when the Cruiser struck the bike in the westbound lane.After initial impact the bike traveled northbound and came to final rest facing northbound on the berm of 248. The Cruiser came to final rest facing westbound in the right westbound lane of 248.Snyder was not injured, troopers said. Damages were disabling to the bike and moderate to the passenger side of the Cruiser.Troopers noted Papay was not wearing a protective helmet.The investigation into the accident is continuing, troopers added.
