The Jim Thorpe Rotary Club annually sponsors students from the Jim Thorpe Area School District to attend the Rotary Youth Leadership Awards Conference, organized by Rotary District 7410. The 2013 RYLA Conference was held at Keystone College in LaPlume, Pa.
The five-day conference began on July 7 and ended on July 11, with a program presented by the students that demonstrated their leadership skills. Students who were to enter the 11th grade were selected by their respective schools, based on good academic record, demonstrated leadership potential and qualities.
The Jim Thorpe Area High School and the Carbon Career and Technical Institute both honored two students by recommending them to the Jim Thorpe Rotary Club for sponsorship, which is $300 per student.
Riley Carroll and Josiah Behrens represented JTAHS, while Owen Henninger and Ashley Pera represented CCTI. The students attended the Sept. 17 meeting of the Jim Thorpe Rotary Club to share their RYLA experience. They and their parents were guests of the club at the luncheon meeting.
Each of the students gave a talk about the conference and expressed their appreciation for the dynamic speakers and the wonderful opportunities gained from the experience.
