Diabetes support

St. Luke's University Health Network is sponsoring a Diabetes Support Group. Monthly meetings are held in the Miner's Cafe at the health network's Miners Hospital Campus in Coaldale.

Each month, a different diabetes relevant topic is explored. Topics are based on ways to improve blood sugar control and quality of life. Meetings are generally 45 minutes long and include a question and answer period.

This month's meeting will be held on Sept. 17. Reservations are not required. For more information, call (570) 645-8107.


An American Red Cross Bloodmobile will be held in Tamaqua on Friday, Sept. 20, at St. John United Church of Christ on Pine Street. Hours will be from 1-6 p.m.

Anyone 17 or older, who weighs at least 110 pounds, and is in good general health is eligible to donate.

Rush taxes

The office of Rush Tax Collector Dolores Walck will be closed on Sept. 17 and Sept. 18. This is a change in the schedule posted on the tax bills.

Faith fellowship

The Tamaqua Area Faith Fellowship Network is participating in this year's "Back to Church Sunday," part of a national movement of churches across America, to be observed on Sept. 15.

On Sept. 12, Tamaqua Mayor Chris Morrison issued a special proclamation in regards to Tamaqua's observance of Back to Church Sunday.

National "Back to Church Sunday" is an initiative that is "Inviting America Back to Church." It seeks to reach the "unchurched" and "de-churched"-people who once attended church, but don't any more-and invite them to return for a special Sunday.

Everyone is welcome to attend the area church of his/her choice.

Zion Lewistown

The Rev. Jim Williams will officiate at the 10:30 a.m. Harvest Home service this Sunday in Zion Church in the Lewistown Valley. Sunday school classes will meet at 9:15 a.m.

Also this Sunday, Zion's is sponsoring a blood drive, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., in the social hall.

Activities for next week will include: Tuesday, fundraiser committee meets at 6:30 p.m., preschool committee meets at 7:30 p.m.; Thursday, consistory meets at 7 p.m.

St. Peter's Union

Sunday worship services are held at 9 a.m. in St. Peter's Union Church, Mantzville. This week's service will include special recognition of 50-year Confirmands. Sunday School will be held at 10:15 a.m.

Also on Sunday, the church board will meet at 10:45 a.m.; Daisies, Brownies and Cub Scouts will meet at 6 p.m. and the youth group will meet at 6 p.m.

Activities for next week will include: Monday, play practice at 6:30 p.m.; Tuesday, Women of St. Peter's meet at 7 p.m.; Thursday, prayer group will meet at 4:45 p.m.; Saturday, Queens of Crop will meet from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.

The choir rehearse on Thursdays. Next week's schedule will include: cherubs at 6:30 p.m., junior choir at 7 p.m. and senior choir at 7:30 p.m.

St. John Lutheran

The Rev. Richard Hinkle will officiate at the 9:15 a.m. worship service this "National Back to Church" Sunday in St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church. Sunday school classes will meet at 10:30 a.m.

Also on Sunday, the Confirmation class will meet at 10:30 a.m.

Next week's activities include: Monday, deadline for October Messenger news; Thursday, learning ministry meets at 6 p.m., property committee meets at 7 p.m., Angel Choir meets at 6 p.m., Shepherd Choir rehearses at 6:30 pm. and Chancel Choir practice is at 7:30 p.m.
