A truck tractor caught fire along Interstate 81 in Ryan Township, Schuylkill County, on Monday afternoon destroying the tractor and extensively damaging the trailer portion.

State police at Frackville said Terry Collins, of Caribou, Maine, was driving a 2000 Freightliner tractor with trailer southbound about 2:26 p.m. near Mile Marker 129.4, when he experienced engine problems.

Collins pulled onto the berm to investigate the problem. The tractor then caught fire in the engine compartment.

The tractor was completely destroyed by the fire while the trailer portion sustained heavy damages, troopers said. Collins was not injured.

Assisting troopers at the scene were volunteer firefighters from Mahanoy City, Ryan Township, Delano Township and Shenandoah and Hometown Fire Police. Also responding were a PennDOT crew, state Department of Environmental Protection employees, and an environmental hazmat cleanup contractor.
