Four local 9/11 services scheduled tomorrow
On Sept. 11, 2001, members of the Islamic terrorist group al-Qaida wrested control of four American passenger jets. They crashed two of them into the World Trade Center towers in New York City, and another into the Pentagon in Washington, DC.
A fourth hijacked jetliner crashed in Somerset County, Pennsylvania, after brave passengers did their best to subdue the terrorists who had taken control.
The attacks, the worst attack by foreigners on American soil since the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor on Dec. 7, 1941, killed more than 3,000 people.
On Wednesday, ceremonies will be held locally to commemorate the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks:
• The Carbon County Department of Veterans Affairs will conduct a memorial service at 8:40 a.m. in the Josiah White Park, Jim Thorpe.
• LIFE (Lehighton Interfaith Fellowship) will hold a remembrance service at 7 p.m. at the Lehighton Park Amphitheater.
• Tamaqua's South Ward Playground Association will hold a service at 6 p.m. at the South Ward Playground, at Penn and Oak streets.
