Lots of surprises during the opening week

Surprise,surprise, surprise....

That's about all you have to say to sum up the first week of the high school football season in THE TIMES NEWS area.

Needless to say, injuries played a part in some of the results, but here's a big hats off to Lehighton's Tom McCarroll and Jim Thorpe's Mark Rosenberg for pulling off the wins over Marian and Tamaqua respectively to put themselves as the only two teams in our coverage area with victories.

The Lehighton win actually propelled staffer Rod Heckman into the early lead in the Grid Picks race. TJ Engle, on the other hand, came up a little short on nine of his picks so he has some work to do. With all of the surprises, yours truly had a 10-5 week and I'll take it.

So it's off to Week 2, a busy one with nine games among area teams tonight so here goes:

BLUE MOUNTAIN AT JIM THORPE - Olympians had a great win against Tamaqua with a great offensive showing and a better defense than they showed in a long while. The home opener brings Blue Mountain into town for another tough one...BLUE MOUNTAIN, 28-14.

MARIAN AT SCHUYLKILL HAVEN - Things don't get any easier for the Colts this week as they travel to Schuylkill Haven to take on the Hurricanes, the team the Anthracite coaches pick to win it all...Schuylkill Haven, 21-7.

PANTHER VALLEY AT SCHUYLKILL VALLEY - The Panthers put up some points against Mahanoy, but gave up too many. That could be the problem again this week...Schuylkill Valley, 38-14.

TAMAQUA AT ALLEN -You know the Raiders had some dandy practices this week after last week's showing against the Olympians...Tamaqua, 35-7.

STROUDSBURG AT LEHIGHTON - The Indians just might be the surprise of the MVC in their last tour in the league. The Mountaineers are strong again, but this could be closer than you think...Stroudsburg, 21-14.

DIERUFF AT PLEASANT VALLEY - Bears are looking to get untracked after getting a rude awakening by Nazareth last week...Pleasant Valley, 35-0.

NOTRE DAME AT NORTHERN LEHIGH - Bulldogs look to put last week's loss to Southern Lehigh behind them. Crusaders almost beat them last year...Northern Lehigh, 14-7.

WILSON AT PALMERTON - Bombers did some good things, but had just enough miscues to lose to Notre Dame. The Warriors come into town with a freshman quarterback and a running game instead of the usual air attack. Best defense wins here...Palmerton, 14-7.

NORTHWESTERN AT SALISBURY - Was last week's win by the Falcons over Bangor a fluke? Tigers lost to Palisades, but my New Tripoli scout says they're improved from last year...Northwestern, 28-14.

BANGOR AT SAUCON VALLEY - Panthers had a rough opener against Pen Argyl. This week things are different...Saucon Valley, 28-7.

SOUTHERN LEHIGH AT CATASAUQUA - Spartans showed they will be a team to be reckoned with after last week's rout of Northern Lehigh. Tough to pick against the defending Colonial League champs, however...Catasauqua, 35-21.

POCONO MOUNTAIN EAST AT EAST STROUDSBURG NORTH - The Timberwolves seem to have a little edge over the Cardinals according to pre-season reports...East Stroudsburg North, 28-21.

PARKLAND AT EASTON - Wow, the Trojans put a hurting on Delaware Valley last week. This week, Easton gets a chance against them...Parkland, 28-14.

WHITEHALL AT LIBERTY - Could be a real headbanger in the Christmas City. The Zephyrs know how to play defense...Whitehall, 21-7.

PEN ARGYL AT PALISADES - Pirates have returnees, but depth is the question. Green Knights have a line that will wear you down...Pen Argyl, 21-6.
