Retired Tamaqua fire chief to be honored at 9/11 service
Tamaqua's South Ward Playground Association will once again sponsor a Community 9/11 service.
This year's event will be held at 6 p.m., on Wednesday, Sept. 11, at the South Ward Playground. The playground is located at Penn and Oak sts.
Former Tamaqua Mayor Richard Hadesty will serve as master of ceremonies, a position he has held since the annual event was created in 2002.
Guest speakers will include: State Rep. Jerry Knowles; Schuylkill County District Attorney Karen Byrnes Noon; Tamaqua Mayor Chris Morrison; Tamaqua Council President Micah Gursky; U.S.M.C veteran Andrew Leibenguth; U.S. Army Col. Robert M. Balcavage; Pastor Ed Noftz; Salvation Army Major Sharon Whispell; Paul Zona of the American Legion Riders; and Mariann Shilko, who will offer "The Fireman's Prayer."
Vocal selections will be provided by Dollinda Linkhorst.
Special guest and honoree will be Thomas "Oakie" Schlorf, an active Tamaqua firefighter from 1984 through 2010, when he retired as the borough's fire chief.
