Redneck Festival is well attended
GAIL MAHOLICK/TIMES NEWS Bob Serfass of Union Hill was the winner of the Best Deer Rack Contest at the Weissport Redneck Festival.
Three days of redneck fun brought out huge crowds at the Weissport Redneck Festival over Labor Day weekend. This was the sixth year for the festival, held in the borough park.
The festival features a variety of contests where the public is encouraged to participate and cheer on their favorite team or contestant.
While some contests were all in fun, such as the Miss Daisy Duke, Mr. Redneck contest, Chariot Races and Best Rack Contest, others had some serious competitors for example the Zimmies and Hot Wings Eating Contest and the Junkman's Contest.
A bevy of 11 beauties vied for the title of Miss Daisy Duke. The largest crowd ever at the festival chose Kiana Begel of Lehighton for the honor.
She had some tough competition as two former winners were her competitors, Rebecca Strohl, 2009 winner, and Amanda Parisi, the first winner in 2007 were among the contestants.
Begal had the honor of crowning Mr. Redneck Scott Daniels of Lehighton. She placed his crown (from Burger King) and give him his cape (shower curtain) and scepter (plunger) and he put on her banner.
The Daisy Duke competition is the most highly attended contest at the festival.
In another fun event, a team of competitors from the Boatyard won the Chariot Race. Their prize was an outhouse seat and some car cleaning supplies. Coming in second was the team of Nola Skinner of Nazareth and David Abromtis of Bethlehem.
Duane Dellecker, master of ceremonies, had a surprise on stage when one of the competitors in the Best Deer Rack Contest was his daughter, Ami Dellecker, who turned out to be the crowds' favorite contestant.
The winner of the Best Deer Rack Contest was Bob Serfass of Union Hill, who brought the skull with the antlers attached, while his competitor, Fred Leiby of Palmerton, showed up with a fully-mounted deer head.
Then for the more serious contests, it was the local restaurants who put the pressure on the judges as they attempted to win the Best Hot Wings Eating Contest. Blue Mountain Pub of Palmerton was able to claim the bragging rights. Accepting the award on stage was Bob Kahn, owner. He operates the pub with his partner, Tracy Mullen.
The first place winner of the Junkman's Contest for the third year in a row was the team of brothers Derek and Tyler Berger of Weissport, while the winners of the Korniest Couple Contest was Ray and Lisann Guernon of Lehighton.
Winners of the Ugliest Pick Up contest was Korey and Harry Rhoades of Walnutport, while the winner of the I Luv My Mummy Contest was Skye Fenton and Krystal Bradford.
Dellecker said that the festival was a lot of fun and plans are already under way for the Weissport Redneck Festival for 2014.
