Part-time clerk to fill super's spot

Published October 29. 2013 05:00PM

Mahoning Township's part-time clerk Kerry Varrastro was appointed by a 4-0 vote to fill the vacancy created by the supervisor killed in a car crash at the end of September.

Verrastro will fill the remainder of the two year term left by Linda Benner's death.

The seat will be up for election in 2015.

"There are two letters of interest for the position," Chairperson John Wieczorek said at last night's regular board of supervisors meeting.

Supervisor Frank Ruch moved to appoint Verrastro to the vacancy which Wieczorek seconded.

The other applicant was Bob Slaw, who serves on the township planning commission.

Verrastro has been working on a part-time basis as the assistant clerk in the township's administration office and ran an unsuccessful bid in the primary last May to be the candidate for tax collector in next week's election.

In other business, the board passed a resolution on a 4-0 vote to begin collecting the local services tax and amusement taxes after the resignation of the tax collector last week.
