Ryan Township supervisor Nicholas Sanko Jr., 76, of south McAdoo, was transported via ambulance to St. Luke's Hospital in Coaldale after crashing into a PPL pole yesterday along Penn Drive in West Penn Township. Emergency crews were called to the intersection of Penn Drive (Route 443) and Spring Road, just outside Mantzville, for a report of a single motor vehicle accident with injury. When they arrived, they observed a gray sedan articulating atop the bottom portion of a snapped PPL pole. Sanko, who was trapped in the vehicle, had to be extricated from the vehicle by firefighters. During the rescue, Sanko could be heard talking to the firefighters. West Penn Police Chief Brian Johnson said Sanko, driving east on Penn Drive, lost control and struck the pole after overshooting a turn in the road while passing a turning vehicle. Responding were Penn Mahoning Ambulance, Lehighton Ambulance, West Penn Fire Company, police and fire police.
