Several crashes occured in recent months on Route 248.

A Slatington motorcyclist died of injuries he sustained in a crash on Saturday, Sept. 22 at the intersection of Centre Street and Route 248 in Parryville. Stephen P. Papay, 56, was operating a Harley Davidson Sportster eastbound when he was stuck by a car attempting to make a left turn onto Centre Street.

Another serious crash took place on Saturday, Aug. 10 when Joseph A. Doria of Bethlehem was driving a 1994 Yamaha motorcycle westbound and a Lehighton woman made a left turn onto Route 248 from Centre Street. The bike crashed into the side of the car as it pulled out.

Speed is also a factor on Route 248 in the vicinity of Centre Street. According to State Police at Lehighton, police were conducting traffic enforcement on Route 248 on Sept. 1, when a motorcycle was traveling 77 mph in the posted 55 mph speed zone. The operator failed to stop at the red traffic light at the intersection of routes 248 and 209 and proceeded to Route 443 where it continued to exceed speeds over 100 miles per hour. The operator of the motorcycle was not caught and police do not know his identity.
