Texas man arrested in Monroe cold case

Published October 18. 2013 05:01PM

State police in Pennsylvania say a Texas man has been arrested in the 1968 slaying of a Bethlehem Steel employee.

State police Cpl. Tom McAndrew says 67-year-old Richard Keiper, of Boyd, Texas, was arrested Thursday and will be returned to Pennsylvania to face homicide charges in the death of Alfred Barnes.

Barnes was an assistant to the vice president at Bethlehem Steel. Hunters in Monroe County found his body in a Chestnuthill Township field on Oct. 19, 1968. He had been shot multiple times.

McAndrew says police recently took another look at the cold case and zeroed in on Keiper, who was arrested without incident at his job at a wastewater treatment plant.

McAndrew says that Keiper, who doesn't yet have an attorney, incriminated himself when he was interviewed by Texas Rangers.
