DA distributes seized drug money to police

Several area police depatments were among 35 departments who received sums of money from District Attorney Karen Byrnes Noon at a ceremony held at the Schuylkill County courthouse in Pottsville earlier this week.

Noon distributed $212,100 which was confiscated by the Schuylkill County Drug Task Force from drug arrests.

Amounts distributed are:

East Union Township, $3,000; Kline Township, $4,000; McAdoo, $6,000; New Philadelphia, $3,000; North Union Township, $3,000; Rush Township, $3,600; Ryan Township, $3,000; Schuylkill Township, $3,000; Tamaqua, $10,000; Walker Township, $3,000; and West Penn Township, $6,000.

Also receiving funds were Ashland, $6,000; Branch/Reily Townships, $6,000; Butler Township, $7,500; Cass Township, $$300; Drug Task Force, $30,000; Frackville, $6,000; Girardville, $6,000.

Hegins Township, $4,000; Mahanoy City, $6,000; Mahanoy Township, $4,000; Minersville, $6,000; Orwigsburg, $6,000; Palo Alto, $3,000.

State Police, Schuylkill Haven Barracks, $6,000; State Police, Frackville Barracks, $6,000; Pine Grove, $3,000; Port Carbon, $3,000; Pottsville, $25,000; Schuylkill Haven, $11,000; Shenandoah, $6,000; Saint Clair, $6,000; Tremont, $4,000; and West Mahanoy Township, $3,000.

Noon stated the money is to be used to purchase equipment such as night vision goggles, drug test kits, and body armor to assist police in the never ending fight against drugs in Schuylkill County.

Some of the money can be used to have officers patroling with a member of the county's drug task force to aid them in what to look for in their communities.

Noon added, "Police officers thrive on challenges. It is my hope that this money will be used to further the fight to reduce drug traffic in our county."
