While this year's edition of the annual Carbon County St. Patrick's Day Parade is now just a fond memory for most of us, the work and efforts of the Ancient Order of Hibernians, Jim Thorpe's Alec Campbell, Mauch Chunk Division #1" to help others continues unabated.
Contrary to a common misconception of some, the AOH does more than just "put on a parade" once a year.
The group's current ongoing project is to make up and distribute "Thanksgiving Day Dinner Baskets" to needy families in parishes throughout the Carbon County area.
Members of the Ancient Order of Hibernians met together last Saturday at Molly Maguires Pub & Steakhouse in JT and prepared the Thanksgiving Day dinner baskets to be delivered to each one of the nine Catholic parishes in Carbon County.
This is the sixth year that they have prepared these baskets, each of which contained all the trimmings for a hearty holiday meal for a needy family.
Each basket contained a whole turkey, gravy, potatoes, stuffing mix, corn, green beans, brown and serve rolls, cranberry sauce, and for desert, chocolate brownies.
The nine parishes receiving the Thanksgiving Day dinner baskets: Immaculate Conception and St. Joseph, both in Jim Thorpe; St. Peter the Fisherman in Lake Harmony; SS Peter and Paul in Lehighton; St. Katharine Drexel in Lansford; St. Francis of Assisi in Nesquehoning; Sacred Heart in Palmerton; St. Joseph in Summit Hill; and Our Lady of Lourdes in Weatherly.
In keeping with the AOH's motto of "Friendship, Unity and Christian Charity", the members personally delivered the food baskets to each parish.
The pastor of each parish to decide which family will receive the Thanksgiving Day dinner basket.
Among their other charitable acts, in addition to these Thanksgiving Day dinner baskets, the AOH also distributes Easter dinner baskets and gift cards at Christmas.
